Her gravestone is presently located in the Elm Grove Cemetery in Mystic near a memorial gravestone for Cap't George and Lady Ann. Robin, another cousin, and I have worked together on a mutual line and she admired the original gravestone of Cap't George's second wife, Ann Borodell. I was wondering how I could ever explain this to people just learning about gravestones? To my surprise, it is NOT the gravestone postcard that the Society sells. When I took this photo, another cousin told me that she owned a postcard from her mother's collection that showed the gravestone. You can see the dark area where it was above ground. I love it because it is the perfect example of how TALL one of these gravestones really is. that when the cemetery wanted to replace this gravestone, they asked the Denison Society if they wanted it for display in the Homestead. I was told by my cousin, Fred Burdick, who is the historian for Stonington, CT. When I visited the Denison Homestead, I took this photo of a well worn sandstone gravestone. Born in England about 1620, George came as a young teen to America settling in Roxbury, MA. I can't wait to read it.Ĭap't George Dension was a colorful figure and his influence on his community is quite well recorded. ![]() I decided that this was a book I wanted to read and much to my delight, my library system has a copy for loan. I am a professional genealogist, writer, photographer, wife, mother, and grandma. Each one is unique and worth remembering. There were so many Headstones to choose from I had a hard time deciding which ones to post. This is the resting place of George Denison, grandson of Captain George and Ann. Over 100 Denisons joined him here until the cemetery closed in the mid-1800s. He was the first person buried on these grounds. John married Phoebe Lay on November 26, 1667. Born on June 14, 1646, in Roxbury, Suffolk County, Massachusetts to George and Ann (Borrodell) Denison. Most of the markers are so badly worn that they are illegible, and many others are knocked over and broken.Ĭaptain John Borrodell Denison was the first of his family to be born in Colonial America. The family cemetery, however, is hard to find, abandoned, and alone in the woods. Their land has become a 250-acre nature center and the family home has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places. Of course, it helps that almost everyone buried there is related! The Denison family appears to have been a prominent one in the town of Mystic Connecticut. This week I thought I would concentrate on an entire cemetery instead of just one Ancestor who was buried there. ![]()
